Real Moves, Real Stories

What a moving company's reviews actually tell you

Where our reviews live, as of September 2026: Google — 588, rated 5.0 · Yelp — 175 · Thumbtack — 136, rated 4.9 · Better Business Bureau — 94, rated 5.0. That is 993 reviews across four independent platforms, none of which we control. Go and read them there rather than here — the ones we could pick are the least useful ones.

Every moving company’s website shows five stars. On its own that tells you very little — the reviews worth reading are the ones that name what happened, not the ones that say “great service”. Here is what we would look for if we were you, on our page or on anyone else’s.

Read the detail, not the score

A useful review names the crew size, the property type, and what went wrong as well as what went right. Stairs at both ends. A piece that would not fit through a door. A job that ran past the estimate. Those are the reviews that tell you how a company behaves when the move stops being easy — which is the only time it matters.

Check the platforms, not just the website

Anything on a company’s own site was chosen by that company. Google, Yelp and the Better Business Bureau were not. Check those too. And while you are checking, our licence numbers are public records: MTR0192675 with the California Bureau of Household Goods and Services, and USDOT 3810402 with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration. Any mover who cannot give you both should not be in your house.

Ask who is actually going to show up

A large share of the bad reviews in this industry come down to one thing: the company that took the booking is not the company that arrives. Smoove sends its own employees — background-checked, trained and certified before they work a job. We are owned by movers, and the crew standard is the part we are least willing to compromise on.

Look at what the complaints have in common

Price surprises are the most common complaint about movers anywhere, and they almost always trace back to something that was never written down. Our hourly rates, the $99 flat rate for truck and gas, the $200 handling fee for any single item over 250 lbs, and the double drive time rule for addresses more than 10 miles apart are all published before you book. If a company will not put its full charge list in front of you first, that is the review you are going to end up writing.
