The 24-hour rule is the one that matters. Manteca Municipal Code 10.46.030 defines an oversized vehicle as one over twenty feet in length, seven feet in height or seven feet in width. Section 10.46.060(A) prohibits parking those on residential streets Monday through Friday, federal holidays excepted — so weekends are genuinely unrestricted. Section 10.46.060(B)(1) then allows “loading, unloading, or cleaning” as long as the vehicle is on the street for no more than twenty-four hours. A single-day move is comfortably inside that. A load-out spread across Monday to Wednesday is not.
There is a free permit for the longer job, and almost nobody knows about it. Sections 10.46.080 to 10.46.110 let the police chief issue an oversized-vehicle permit with, in the code’s own words, “no fee charged”. It runs up to five consecutive calendar days, capped at ten days in any ninety-day period, and must be applied for in advance. If your move needs the truck on the street for more than a day, this is the answer and it costs nothing.
Weight is where Manteca gets unusual. Section 10.52.010(B) sets a citywide gross weight limit of eight thousand pounds on any street in the city — far stricter than the three-to-five ton limits typical of neighbouring cities. Moffat Boulevard, Lathrop Road, South Main below Moffat and part of Grant Street are exempted. Section 10.52.030(B) exempts vehicles “making pickups or deliveries of goods, wares and merchandise from or to any building or structure located on such restricted streets”, which is what a move is. We read that exemption as covering a household move; whether it also lifts the citywide 8,000-pound limit is genuinely ambiguous on the face of the code, so we confirm the route with the city rather than assume it.
One more, if your truck has a lift gate or a reefer unit. Section 10.52.060(A) prohibits running an auxiliary engine between ten p.m. and seven a.m. within 250 feet of a residential district, for vehicles over ten thousand pounds. It rules out a late-night finish with the power unit running.
There is no curb-reservation permit in Manteca and no tow-away sign program — we checked the parking chapter, the streets title and the engineering permit list. Nothing reserves the space for you, so where access is tight we plan to arrive early.
Code sections and fees change. We re-check with the city before move day rather than relying on what was true last year.
Permit and access details confirmed against the city's own published guidance. Rules change — we re-check before move day.
