Movers in Petaluma

Petaluma gives you no fixed clock and no permit to buy. Commercial vehicles are barred from parking in residential districts, with an exception for loading or unloading “for such time as is reasonably necessary” — a standard, not a number. That is more forgiving than Manteca’s hard 24-hour cap and less predictable than either.

Hourly rates start at $159 for two movers and a fully equipped truck, and you get the price online before anyone comes to your door.

Moving in Petaluma: what affects your day

The binding rule is a soft one. Petaluma Municipal Code 11.44.120 prohibits commercial vehicles from parking in residential districts — the section expressly carves out station wagons and pickups of three-quarters of a ton or less, which tells you where the line sits. The exceptions are “while loading or unloading property for such time as is reasonably necessary”, and parking “in connection with, and in aid of, the performance of a service to or on a property in the block in which such vehicle is parked”. Neither carries an hour figure. There is no safe-harbour period to point at and no permit that pre-clears a long load-out.

Getting there: five tons, and routes you cannot look up. Section 11.52.060 requires vehicles over a maximum gross weight of five tons to use designated truck routes. Section 11.52.100(A) exempts a vehicle “coming from an unrestricted street having ingress or egress by direct route to and from a restricted street when necessary for the purpose of making pickups or deliveries” — a household move fits. The catch is that the routes themselves are designated by city council resolution and are not printed in the code, and we were unable to locate the resolution on a public source. So the approach has to be confirmed with the city rather than read off a published map.

Petaluma can weigh the truck. Section 11.52.090 authorises any police officer to require a truck operating off a truck route to proceed to a public or private scale to determine whether the chapter has been violated. That is an unusually direct enforcement power and it is worth knowing it exists.

No curb reservation exists. We checked the city’s parking and curb management program, the encroachment permit requirements and the current master fee schedule. Petaluma sells downtown employee parking permits and handles curb color changes case by case, but there is no temporary no-parking permit and no meter bagging for a move. Street closures are priced at $787 a day residential and $1,573 arterial — that is a road closure, not a parking space, and it is not what a move needs.

Rules and fees change. We re-check with the city before move day rather than relying on what was true last year.

Permit and access details confirmed against the city's own published guidance. Rules change — we re-check before move day.

Double drive time applies when pickup and delivery are more than ten miles apart. A move inside Petaluma falls under that line; Petaluma to Santa Rosa, Novato or San Rafael is over it, and so is anything across the bay. Your quote shows which way yours lands before you book.

Questions about moving in Petaluma

How long can the moving truck stay on my street in Petaluma?

As long as loading or unloading reasonably requires — the code says exactly that and gives no number. It is more generous than cities with a fixed cap, but it also means there is no defined period you are safe within, and no permit available to extend it. Once the work stops, the truck should not be sitting there.

Do I need a permit or no-parking signs in Petaluma?

No, and none exists for a move. Petaluma has no temporary no-parking or curb-reservation permit. The street closure fees you may find quoted — $787 a day residential, $1,573 arterial — are for closing a road, not reserving a parking space, and are not relevant to a household move.

Which route will the truck take to my address?

Anything over five tons must use Petaluma's designated truck routes, leaving them only by direct route to make a delivery. Unusually, those routes are set by council resolution and are not published in the municipal code, so we confirm the approach with the city rather than guessing — and Petaluma police can require a truck off-route to report to a weighbridge.

FAQ

How much does a move cost?

Rates start at $159/hour for two movers and a 16ft truck, $199/hour for three movers and a 26ft truck, $249/hour for four, and $299/hour for five. Add a one-time $99 flat rate for truck and gas, whatever truck size you need. You price the job yourself online — pick your crew, date and addresses and the quote comes back in minutes. No in-home visit, no sales call.

What isn’t included in the hourly rate?

Six things, all of them listed up front: the $99 flat rate for truck and gas; packing supplies such as boxes, paper and bubble wrap; a $200 handling fee for any single item over 250 lbs (piano, gun safe, pool table, treadmill, massage chair); double drive time when your two addresses are more than 10 miles apart; overnight storage; and custom crating or specialty handling for antiques and delicate pieces.

Are you licensed and insured?

Yes. Smoove holds MTR0192675 with the California Bureau of Household Goods and Services and USDOT 3810402 with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, and carries up to $1,000,000 in general liability cover. Basic cargo protection for your household goods is included in every move. Both license numbers are public records — look them up before you book, with us or anyone else.

What areas do you serve?

The Sacramento region and the Bay Area — more than 70 cities, from Auburn and Elk Grove through to San Jose and Walnut Creek. We also handle long-distance moves within California, originating in either region. We are not currently authorized for interstate moves, so if you are leaving the state we will tell you straight away and point you to a carrier who is.

For thirteen of those cities we have written up the local parking rules, permits and truck access, and what each one actually means on move day: Sacramento, West Sacramento, Folsom, Rocklin, Placerville, El Dorado Hills, Stockton, Manteca, San Francisco, San Mateo, Walnut Creek, Vallejo and Petaluma.
