icon-8 always on time

The move that should be simple, and usually isn't

A local move looks easy on paper — it’s across town, not across the country. Then the elevator’s booked, the couch doesn’t clear the stairwell, and what was quoted as four hours becomes seven. We size the crew and truck to the job before the day starts, so the estimate you get online is the one you pay.

Ask us before you book

Not sure how many hours your move will take, or whether your building's rules will slow the day down? Send us the two addresses and roughly what's moving, and we'll tell you straight — no site visit, no sales call.

Why people hire us for local moves

Owned by the movers who show up

The crew on your job is on our payroll — trained, certified and background-checked — never labour hired that morning. Nobody earns commission for upselling you, because nobody here is selling. We’ve completed over 5,000 moves since 2020, and we’re licensed, insured and bonded: MTR0192675 with the California Bureau of Household Goods and Services, USDOT 3810402 with FMCSA, carrying up to $1,000,000 in general liability cover.

The Moving Process

At Smoove, we follow a proven moving process to ensure a smooth transition from your old location to the new one. From packing and loading to unloading and unpacking, our team will handle every aspect of your move with care and efficiency.

How a local move is priced

Local moves are billed by the hour. The two things that move the number are how many movers you need and how big the truck has to be, and both are set by what’s being moved — not by how the day happens to go.

You get that price online. Enter the two addresses and what’s coming with you, and the quote comes back without an in-home survey, a phone call or a salesperson in your living room.

What sits alongside the hourly rate. A flat $99 truck and fuel charge, the same whatever size truck the job needs. If your two addresses are more than 10 miles apart, drive time is billed at double — that’s how the time between the two homes is accounted for. Any single item over 250 lbs, such as a safe or a piano, carries a $200 handling fee.

If the job turns out smaller than quoted, you’re billed for the hours worked. If it turns out bigger, we tell you before the clock keeps running, not after.

Local moves we handle

Apartments and condos. Stairs, lifts and loading bays booked ahead where the building requires it.

Houses. Studio to five bedrooms, crew and truck sized to the job rather than the other way round.

Single rooms and partial moves. One bedroom, one office, one storage unit — you don’t have to move a whole house to book us.

Heavy and awkward items. Safes, pianos, gym equipment and oversized furniture that other crews turn down.

Senior and assisted-living moves. Slower pace, more communication, and help placing furniture at the other end.

Every job is done by our own employees — trained, certified and background-checked. We’re licensed, insured and bonded: MTR0192675 with the California Bureau of Household Goods and Services, USDOT 3810402 with FMCSA, with up to $1,000,000 in general liability cover. We serve the Sacramento region and the Bay Area.

Related services

Moving inside the same town rather than across the region? See in-town moves. If it’s a flat, apartment moving covers the elevator and loading-dock questions; for a whole house, house moves. Want it boxed before we arrive? That’s packing, or pick up boxes and materials and do it yourself. If your dates don’t line up, storage bridges the gap. Price it in minutes with an instant quote.

FAQ

How much does a move cost?

Rates start at $159/hour for two movers and a 16ft truck, $199/hour for three movers and a 26ft truck, $249/hour for four, and $299/hour for five. Add a one-time $99 flat rate for truck and gas, whatever truck size you need. You price the job yourself online — pick your crew, date and addresses and the quote comes back in minutes. No in-home visit, no sales call.

What isn’t included in the hourly rate?

Six things, all of them listed up front: the $99 flat rate for truck and gas; packing supplies such as boxes, paper and bubble wrap; a $200 handling fee for any single item over 250 lbs (piano, gun safe, pool table, treadmill, massage chair); double drive time when your two addresses are more than 10 miles apart; overnight storage; and custom crating or speciality handling for antiques and delicate pieces.

Are you licensed and insured?

Yes. Smoove holds MTR0192675 with the California Bureau of Household Goods and Services and USDOT 3810402 with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, and carries up to $1,000,000 in general liability cover. Basic cargo protection for your household goods is included in every move. Both licence numbers are public records — look them up before you book, with us or anyone else.

What areas do you serve?

The Sacramento region and the Bay Area — more than 70 cities, from Auburn and Elk Grove through to San Jose and Walnut Creek. We also handle long-distance moves within California, originating in either region. We are not currently authorised for interstate moves, so if you are leaving the state we will tell you straight away and point you to a carrier who is.

For thirteen of those cities we have written up the local parking rules, permits and truck access, and what each one actually means on move day: Sacramento, West Sacramento, Folsom, Rocklin, Placerville, El Dorado Hills, Stockton, Manteca, San Francisco, San Mateo, Walnut Creek, Vallejo and Petaluma.
