Movers in San Mateo

San Mateo is the one city whose code names moving vans by name — section 11.28.040(d) exempts “tow trucks or moving vans providing a service on a street” from the truck route rule. It is also the city with the strictest number on this page: section 11.32.030 caps loading or unloading of materials from a motor truck on any city street at thirty minutes.

Those two facts sit awkwardly together, and we would rather say so than pretend otherwise. Hourly rates start at $159 for two movers and a fully equipped truck, priced online before anyone comes to your door.

Moving in San Mateo: what affects your day

The thirty-minute rule, and why we flag it. San Mateo Municipal Code 11.32.030 says no person shall park a motor truck on any street “for any purpose other than the loading or unloading of passengers or materials”, and that unloading materials “shall not consume more than 30 minutes”. Read alone, that is impossible for a household move. But section 11.32.105(a)(1), added later, exempts oversized vehicles parked for “loading or unloading of persons or property” with no time limit attached. The code does not say which governs. We tell customers about both, plan the job so the truck is worked continuously rather than left standing, and check with the city where a move is likely to run long on a busy street.

Oversized vehicles are otherwise barred from residential streets. Section 11.32.105 makes it unlawful to park an oversized vehicle on a public street in a residential zone. Section 11.32.020(c) defines that as anything over 7½ feet high or wide, over 22 feet long, or with a GVWR over 10,000 pounds — a 26-foot truck meets every one of those. The loading and unloading exception above is what makes the move lawful.

Getting there is unusually easy. Section 11.28.032 requires anything over five tons GVWR to stay on designated truck routes, and section 11.28.036 prints the full list in the code — US 101, El Camino Real, Highway 92, and named segments of 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 9th, 19th, 25th, 28th and 37th Avenues, plus South Claremont, Concar, South Delaware, Edison, Fashion Island, Franklin Parkway, East Hillsdale, South Humboldt, Kehoe, Mariner’s Island, South Norfolk, Peninsula, East Poplar, Saratoga and Bridgepointe. Two carry their own hours: East 3rd Avenue eastbound is 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., and Kehoe Avenue and South Norfolk are 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. on weekdays. And section 11.28.040(d) exempts moving vans outright.

Signs you can buy, without a published process. San Mateo sells temporary “No Parking” signs over the counter at Public Works for $4.00 each — the city’s own guidance describes using them to reserve a space for a storage container. What it does not publish is how far ahead they must go up, who posts them, or how far apart they go. Downtown metered spaces are different: those are reserved under section 11.44.110 at $12.50 per meter per day plus a $77 installation fee, and the listed grounds are construction and refurbishment rather than moving.

Rules and fees change. We re-check with the city before move day rather than relying on what was true last year.

Permit and access details confirmed against the city's own published guidance. Rules change — we re-check before move day.

Double drive time applies when pickup and delivery are more than ten miles apart. A move inside San Mateo falls under that line; San Mateo to San Francisco, Oakland or Sacramento is over it. Any city sign or meter fees are separate from the hourly rate.

Questions about moving in San Mateo

Is there really a thirty-minute limit on unloading in San Mateo?

That is what one section says, and you should hear it from us rather than from a parking officer. Section 11.32.030 caps unloading materials from a motor truck at thirty minutes, while a later section exempts oversized vehicles loading or unloading property with no time limit at all. The code does not resolve which wins. In practice we keep the truck worked continuously rather than standing, and on a long move on a busy street we check with the city first.

Can I reserve a parking space for the truck in San Mateo?

Partly. The city sells temporary No Parking signs at the Public Works counter for $4.00 each, which is what its own guidance suggests for reserving space. There is no published notice period, posting rule or spacing requirement for a residential move, so it is not a formal reservation the way San Francisco's is. Downtown metered spaces are handled separately at $12.50 per meter per day plus a $77 installation fee.

Does a moving truck have to follow San Mateo's truck routes?

No — and San Mateo is the only city near us that says so in as many words. Anything over five tons must normally stay on the designated routes, but section 11.28.040(d) exempts tow trucks and moving vans providing a service on a street. The routes are printed in the code if you want to check them, and two segments carry daytime-only hours.

FAQ

How much does a move cost?

Rates start at $159/hour for two movers and a 16ft truck, $199/hour for three movers and a 26ft truck, $249/hour for four, and $299/hour for five. Add a one-time $99 flat rate for truck and gas, whatever truck size you need. You price the job yourself online — pick your crew, date and addresses and the quote comes back in minutes. No in-home visit, no sales call.

What isn’t included in the hourly rate?

Six things, all of them listed up front: the $99 flat rate for truck and gas; packing supplies such as boxes, paper and bubble wrap; a $200 handling fee for any single item over 250 lbs (piano, gun safe, pool table, treadmill, massage chair); double drive time when your two addresses are more than 10 miles apart; overnight storage; and custom crating or specialty handling for antiques and delicate pieces.

Are you licensed and insured?

Yes. Smoove holds MTR0192675 with the California Bureau of Household Goods and Services and USDOT 3810402 with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, and carries up to $1,000,000 in general liability cover. Basic cargo protection for your household goods is included in every move. Both license numbers are public records — look them up before you book, with us or anyone else.

What areas do you serve?

The Sacramento region and the Bay Area — more than 70 cities, from Auburn and Elk Grove through to San Jose and Walnut Creek. We also handle long-distance moves within California, originating in either region. We are not currently authorized for interstate moves, so if you are leaving the state we will tell you straight away and point you to a carrier who is.

For thirteen of those cities we have written up the local parking rules, permits and truck access, and what each one actually means on move day: Sacramento, West Sacramento, Folsom, Rocklin, Placerville, El Dorado Hills, Stockton, Manteca, San Francisco, San Mateo, Walnut Creek, Vallejo and Petaluma.
