Movers in Placerville

Placerville is the rare case where the restriction is about the route rather than the curb. We could find no ordinance limiting how long a truck may sit on a residential street here — but the city does restrict which streets a vehicle over three tons may drive on at all, and it names seven streets where commercial vehicles of six thousand pounds or more are prohibited.

So the planning happens before the truck arrives, not after. Hourly rates start at $159 for two movers and a fully equipped truck, priced online before anyone comes to your door.

Moving in Placerville: what affects your day

The route is the constraint. Placerville City Code 9-2-13(C) requires the operator of any vehicle over a maximum gross weight of three tons to drive on designated truck routes “and none other”. The exemption is the familiar one: a vehicle “having ingress and egress by direct route to and from restricted streets when necessary for the purpose of making pick ups or deliveries of goods, wares and merchandise from or to any building or structure located on such restricted streets”. A household move fits squarely inside it.

The routes are actually published, which helps. Section 9-2-13(D) lists them in the code: Bedford Avenue from US 50 to Main, Broadway from Mosquito Road to the east city limits, Carson Road, Cedar Ravine Street, Cold Springs Road, Main Street from US 50 to Washington, Mosquito Road, Pacific Street, Placerville Drive, and Spring Street from US 50 to Main. Both this and the prohibition below are expressly conditioned on the city having erected signs.

Seven streets are closed to commercial vehicles over six thousand pounds. Section 9-2-14(D) names them: Bedford Avenue between Spring and Pleasant, Coloma Street between Spring and High, Coolwater Creek Road, Dimity Lane, Mallard Lane, Smithflat Road, and Spring Street between Coloma and Bedford. The same delivery exemption applies, so a move to an address on one of those streets is still lawful — but it is worth knowing your street is on the list, and worth telling us.

What we could not find, and are not going to invent. Placerville’s code contains no oversized-vehicle or commercial-vehicle parking prohibition for residential streets, and no time cap on loading or unloading outside marked yellow zones — where the limit is twenty minutes between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m., Monday to Saturday. If a rule exists that we could not locate, we would rather check with the city than guess.

Reserving the curb is possible but awkward. There is no moving permit. Curb space runs through the encroachment permit, which asks directly whether you need city parking spaces: $336 for a general permit, $104 for a no-dig, no-traffic-control permit, plus $51 per parking space (Resolution 9473, effective 24 November 2025). Section 9-3-1(A)(6) requires no-parking signs to be up at least twenty-four hours beforehand. The permit is framed around “work” and the general type asks for a contractor’s license number, so whether a residential mover qualifies is a question for the city.

A 26-foot truck needs no transportation permit here — those start above 8’6″ wide, 14′ high, 40′ single-unit, or 80,000 pounds. Rules and fees change, so we re-check before move day.

Permit and access details confirmed against the city's own published guidance. Rules change — we re-check before move day.

Double drive time applies when pickup and delivery are more than ten miles apart. A move inside Placerville falls under that line; Placerville to Folsom, El Dorado Hills or central Sacramento is over it. Your quote shows which way yours lands before you book.

Questions about moving in Placerville

How long can the truck stay on my street in Placerville?

We could not find any ordinance putting a time limit on it for an ordinary residential street, and we are not going to invent one. The twenty-minute limit you may read about applies to marked yellow commercial loading zones between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m., not to the curb outside a house. If your situation is unusual we will check with the city rather than assume.

Is my street closed to moving trucks?

Seven are restricted to commercial vehicles of six thousand pounds or more: Bedford between Spring and Pleasant, Coloma between Spring and High, Coolwater Creek Road, Dimity Lane, Mallard Lane, Smithflat Road, and Spring between Coloma and Bedford. Deliveries to a building on those streets are exempt, so a move is still lawful — but tell us if you are on one and we will plan the approach.

Do I need a permit to reserve parking in Placerville?

There is no moving permit. Curb space goes through the encroachment permit, which costs $336 for the general type or $104 for a no-dig permit, plus $51 per parking space, and signs must be posted twenty-four hours ahead. The permit is written around construction work and the general type asks for a contractor's license, so whether a household move qualifies is worth asking the city before you rely on it.

FAQ

How much does a move cost?

Rates start at $159/hour for two movers and a 16ft truck, $199/hour for three movers and a 26ft truck, $249/hour for four, and $299/hour for five. Add a one-time $99 flat rate for truck and gas, whatever truck size you need. You price the job yourself online — pick your crew, date and addresses and the quote comes back in minutes. No in-home visit, no sales call.

What isn’t included in the hourly rate?

Six things, all of them listed up front: the $99 flat rate for truck and gas; packing supplies such as boxes, paper and bubble wrap; a $200 handling fee for any single item over 250 lbs (piano, gun safe, pool table, treadmill, massage chair); double drive time when your two addresses are more than 10 miles apart; overnight storage; and custom crating or specialty handling for antiques and delicate pieces.

Are you licensed and insured?

Yes. Smoove holds MTR0192675 with the California Bureau of Household Goods and Services and USDOT 3810402 with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, and carries up to $1,000,000 in general liability cover. Basic cargo protection for your household goods is included in every move. Both license numbers are public records — look them up before you book, with us or anyone else.

What areas do you serve?

The Sacramento region and the Bay Area — more than 70 cities, from Auburn and Elk Grove through to San Jose and Walnut Creek. We also handle long-distance moves within California, originating in either region. We are not currently authorized for interstate moves, so if you are leaving the state we will tell you straight away and point you to a carrier who is.

For thirteen of those cities we have written up the local parking rules, permits and truck access, and what each one actually means on move day: Sacramento, West Sacramento, Folsom, Rocklin, Placerville, El Dorado Hills, Stockton, Manteca, San Francisco, San Mateo, Walnut Creek, Vallejo and Petaluma.
