Movers in Walnut Creek

Walnut Creek is the only city in our service area that will actually sell you the curb. Its fee schedule carries a line for “Parking Permits (to reserve a parking space for moving or construction)” at $2.00 per sign, plus a full-day meter fee where the spaces are metered. Compare San Francisco, where the same thing starts at $355.

The catch is a list of thirty-six streets that commercial vehicles may not drive on at all. Hourly rates start at $159 for two movers and a fully equipped truck, priced online before anyone comes to your door.

Moving in Walnut Creek: what affects your day

You can reserve the space, and it is cheap. Walnut Creek’s master fee schedule prices a parking permit for a move at $2.00 per sign, with a meter fee “based on full day use at current per hour fee” where meters are involved. The code basis is section 3-5.1013, which lets the Chief of Code Enforcement, with the City Transportation Engineer’s concurrence, grant permission to park vehicles in public parking places for special occasions. What the city does not publish is a lead time, a posting window or a sign spacing rule, so this is arranged with Engineering rather than booked against a published standard — which is exactly why we ask for your date early.

Parking on a residential street is permitted for the delivery itself. Section 3-5.1106 bars a commercial vehicle of ten thousand pounds GVWR or more from a residential street “except when the commercial vehicle is making pickups or deliveries of goods, wares and merchandise from or to any building or structure located on the restricted street”. No hour limit is attached, though section 3-5.1005 caps any vehicle on any street at seventy-two hours.

The thirty-six streets are the real trap. Section 3-5.1302 closes a named list of streets to commercial vehicles outright, and several of them are residential — Walnut Boulevard, Buena Vista Avenue, Parkside Drive, Hillside Avenue, Sunnyvale Avenue, San Luis Road, Minert Road, Castle Hill Road, Putnam Boulevard, Carriage Drive and Dorsch Road among them. Crucially, the exception on that list is not a delivery exception: it permits driving there only “when necessary to traverse such street or portion thereof to a destination not accessible by any other street”. So a delivery exemption covers parking under 3-5.1106 while the drive to reach it may not be covered under 3-5.1302. If your address is on one of those streets, tell us — it changes how we approach, and it is the single most common way a Walnut Creek move goes wrong.

The truck routes are published, which is a relief. Section 3-5.1301(d) lists twelve of them in the code itself — Ygnacio Valley Road, South Main, Newell Avenue, North and South California Boulevard, North Main, Mt. Diablo Boulevard, Olympic Boulevard, Treat Boulevard, Geary Road, Oak Grove Road, Highway 24 and I-680 — for anything over three tons gross weight, with the usual loading and unloading deviation allowed.

A 26-foot truck needs no oversize permit here: those start above 8’6″ wide, 14′ high, 65′ long or 80,000 pounds. Fees and lists change, so we re-check before move day.

Permit and access details confirmed against the city's own published guidance. Rules change — we re-check before move day.

Double drive time applies when pickup and delivery are more than ten miles apart. A move inside Walnut Creek falls under that line; Walnut Creek to San Francisco, Oakland or Sacramento is over it. The city's parking sign fee is a separate city charge and sits outside the hourly rate.

Questions about moving in Walnut Creek

Can I reserve parking for the truck in Walnut Creek?

Yes — it is one of very few cities nearby where you can. The city charges $2.00 per sign, plus a full-day meter fee where the spaces are metered, under a permit for reserving a parking space for moving or construction. The city does not publish a lead time or posting window, so it is arranged directly with Engineering. Give us your date as early as you can.

Is my street closed to moving trucks?

It might be. Walnut Creek closes thirty-six named streets to commercial vehicles, and several are residential — Walnut Boulevard, Buena Vista, Parkside, Hillside, Sunnyvale, San Luis, Minert, Castle Hill, Putnam, Carriage and Dorsch among them. The exception there is only for destinations not reachable by any other street, not a general delivery exception. Tell us your address and we will check it before the day.

Does the truck need an oversize permit in Walnut Creek?

No. Oversize permits start above 8 feet 6 inches wide, 14 feet high, 65 feet long or 80,000 pounds, and a 26-foot moving truck is under all of those. They cost $16 when they are needed, which for a household move they are not.

FAQ

How much does a move cost?

Rates start at $159/hour for two movers and a 16ft truck, $199/hour for three movers and a 26ft truck, $249/hour for four, and $299/hour for five. Add a one-time $99 flat rate for truck and gas, whatever truck size you need. You price the job yourself online — pick your crew, date and addresses and the quote comes back in minutes. No in-home visit, no sales call.

What isn’t included in the hourly rate?

Six things, all of them listed up front: the $99 flat rate for truck and gas; packing supplies such as boxes, paper and bubble wrap; a $200 handling fee for any single item over 250 lbs (piano, gun safe, pool table, treadmill, massage chair); double drive time when your two addresses are more than 10 miles apart; overnight storage; and custom crating or specialty handling for antiques and delicate pieces.

Are you licensed and insured?

Yes. Smoove holds MTR0192675 with the California Bureau of Household Goods and Services and USDOT 3810402 with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, and carries up to $1,000,000 in general liability cover. Basic cargo protection for your household goods is included in every move. Both license numbers are public records — look them up before you book, with us or anyone else.

What areas do you serve?

The Sacramento region and the Bay Area — more than 70 cities, from Auburn and Elk Grove through to San Jose and Walnut Creek. We also handle long-distance moves within California, originating in either region. We are not currently authorized for interstate moves, so if you are leaving the state we will tell you straight away and point you to a carrier who is.

For thirteen of those cities we have written up the local parking rules, permits and truck access, and what each one actually means on move day: Sacramento, West Sacramento, Folsom, Rocklin, Placerville, El Dorado Hills, Stockton, Manteca, San Francisco, San Mateo, Walnut Creek, Vallejo and Petaluma.
